El Paso area West 2009
We went back to the area of the fire to look into the fluorite mine.
Greater Earless Lizard about 3.5" long (not including the tail).

That purple stuff is the fluorite. fluorite crystals are octahedrons (8 sides). At this site it comes in shades of purple and green.

Beautiful crystals here.
After 2 or so hours we have a few really nice specimens. Now we have to carry them all the way down to the truck. The truck is that white dot way down there in the next picture.

There were a number of these millipedes out there. Most were about 7 to 9 inches long and fascinating to watch.
Take a closer look at those mountains.

This Jack Rabbit just sat on the road and let me take her picture. It was about 2 feet tall. Jack Rabbits can travel up to 40 miles an hour, and leap more than ten feet in one jump. I didn't know they had black tails.

Western Kingbirds were all over the place.
White Winged Dove.
Select panorama (450kb) for a larger version of the above picture.
