This Scaled Quail was moving fast to lure us away from his mate.

A very green creosote bush with its yellow flowers and furry seeds.
The buffalo gourd was used by the Native Americans to make ceremonial rattles, soap, and insecticide. It has medicinal value as well. It is a perrenial with a very long taproot. Its above ground annual vines can reach lengths of more than 650 feet. Its flower is below.

The graffiti that covers much of the pictographs goes back to the 1800s but since it is over 100 years old, it has become historic too. The graffiti was made by people during the time the Butterfield Stage (1858 till 1861) was running. Some were actually before that.
Notice the snake. Start at the left and find the head, then the rest of the body in the pictures to the right.

This is a hole where they ground their grain into meal to make bread or other food.
