Katrina August 29, 2005
UNO's main campus on Lakeshore Drive
Science building basement had power, fiber and controller network for the AC/heat controls, and phone. The fiber network for the campus computers was on the first floor so was not flooded. The basement flooded all the way to the ceiling. This is part of the power. Even though they are very hard to see at the top, there are many water lines from the top down. As the water was being pumped out, it would stay at one level for a while. Each water line represents a different time when the water stayed at that level for a while. There was lots of small debris on the ceiling the first time we saw this area. These pictures are after it was cleaned by the remediation crew. Note the water line in the glass of the window of the far left unit. We were not able to get into here to help with the fiber until mid December 2005 (3-1/2 months after the storm).
All the phone services for the building went through here.

When the remediation began all entrances to the building were shut off and plastic with duct tape blocked each door. A warning note was usually posted on all the doors. Most times extremely hot air was pumped into the building to kill and dry out all the mold.
The notes were rarely signed.
